The borough has a total area of 9.22 square miles (23.89&nbsp;km<sup>2</sup>), including 6.40 square miles (16.58&nbsp;km<sup>2</sup>) of land and 2.82 square miles (7.31&nbsp;km<sup>2</sup>) of water (30.61%).<ref name=CensusArea/><ref name=GR1 />

The borough borders [[Closter, New Jersey|Closter]], [[Cresskill, New Jersey|Cresskill]], [[Demarest, New Jersey|Demarest]], [[Norwood, New Jersey|Norwood]], [[Rockleigh, New Jersey|Rockleigh]] and [[Tenafly, New Jersey|Tenafly]] in Bergen County. Across the [[Hudson River]], the borough borders [[The Bronx]] in [[New York City]], and in [[Westchester County, New York|Westchester County]] the city of [[Yonkers, New York|Yonkers]] and the village of [[Hastings-on-Hudson, New York|Hastings-on-Hudson]] (within the [[Greenburgh, New York|town of Greenburgh]]).
