Aguadilla is a shortening of the town's original name ''San Carlos de La Aguadilla''. The name ''Aguadilla'' is a diminutive of ''[[Aguada, Puerto Rico|Aguada]]'', which is the name of the [[Aguada barrio-pueblo|town]] and municipality located to the south.
