It was the first World Cup that was staged in North America and the first to be staged outside of South America and Europe. Further distinction would come to Mexico at the [[1986 FIFA World Cup|1986 World Cup]] when it became the first country to host the FIFA World Cup twice after stepping in as a substitute for Colombia, which was struggling financially.<ref name="Hosting"/>
